Building Mangabeiras
The construction of Pousada Mangabeiras: a struggle with respect to environmental laws
The Mangabeiras Pousada was one of the first commercial establishments in the entire archipelago to obtain the Environmental License issued by the Environmental Resources Center (CRA) of the State of Bahia and by IBAMA.

All of this because building in a place such as Boipeba is certainly a great challenge. Being on a top of a hill increases the difficulties!

All basic materials such as cement, brick, iron and gravel were purchased in the city of Valença and delivered to the village of Torrinhas, the nearest place on the island where a truck can be reached.

A real epic began to take place so that this material was at the construction site ready for use. That's because everything was brought by the rivers that give access to Boipeba. The material was shipped in Torrinhas and it traveled 1 hour to cross the bar of the Inferno river and to be landed here. We depended on the tides and the weather for that, too much wind or rain, for example, would make travel impossible. As we do not have a pier near us the landing took place on the beach itself by the shoulders of the strong dockers who, with water above the waist, were in charge of this heavy (literally!) mission.

Once the material was properly disembarked the slow climb on the backs of donkeys and mules to the construction site began. Even a strong Nelore bull was used to drag the wood up the hill. Later with the construction of our lift things became a little easier.

Currently the entire operation of Pousada Mangabeiras is designed so that the socio-environmental impacts are minimal. We follow the strict Code of Ethics of Environmental Conduct of the Association Roteiros de Charme. www.roteirosdecharme.com.br/meio-ambiente.php. All trash generated at the inn is properly separated and sent for recycling. The organic garbage turns compost to our orchard and vegetable garden. We use solar energy for water heating and we do periodic training with our team on sustainable practices.

In fact, we greatly value the local workforce! We believe that the sustainability of tourism can only happen with the inclusion of the community. Most of our team is made up of natives from Boipeba, who were hired after intense training right here at the inn.

In addition we outsource various activities to members of the community, such as tours and transfers. Pousada Mangabeiras supports several cultural activities in Boipeba and actively participates in the board of the Association of Residents and Friends of Boipeba - AMABO. www.ilhaboipeba.org.br
